Welcome to the exciting world of the Cottage RV!

The Cottage RV is the seasonal recreation home of the future – and you can own it now.

The Cottage RV is cost effective, sized and priced to fit any need and budget; suitable for young families to early retirees. Unlike other seasonal recreation homes, the greatest appeal of the Cottage RV lies in the real estate agent’s mantra: “Location, location, location!”

Many people still don’t know that there are over 100,000 Cottage RV sites in Ontario alone – and many of these sites are an easy, one hour drive from Toronto. These sites are located in what are called RV Resorts – each offering anywhere from 50 to 500 specialized Cottage RV sites. Lots of location choices! These fabulous RV Resorts accommodate golfing, beaches, serious boating (power or sail), fishing, and organized activities for children, teenagers, and retirees. They have all the vacation activities you could ever desire – from peaceful wilderness hikes to hot casino action and entertainment!

You can learn all about these exciting leisure activities at the Cottage RV Show, part of the Motor Home & Trailer Shows. The RV Resort operators are well-represented at all of them with information booths and exciting displays.

What other appeals do Cottage RV’s offer?

Well, it’s not a topic many of us like to bring up, but have you ever had a bad neighbour? You can’t just move away and leave them, can you? With a Cottage RV you can! Every Cottage RV can be easily relocated to another site in the same RV Resort (many have over 250 sites so there are lots of opportunities to relocate without leaving the resort itself). And if you really are tired of a particular RV Resort, you just move to another one – no problem! Ten miles or a hundred miles – relocating a Cottage RV is a snap!

Why is a Cottage RV just like…well, a cottage?

Many RV Resorts are open 12 months of the year and Cottage RV’s are built for year-round use. Heating and air-conditioning – Cottage RV’s have it all!

Types of Cottage RV’s

The basic Cottage RV’s fall into three categories:

1. 102-inches wide
2. 12-feet wide, singles or doubles
3. Two step 5 to 102-inches wide

The 102-inch Wide

This is basically a 102-inch wide living space that can be relocated with a pick-up truck. They come in various lengths – short ones (20-feet) have a single axle; longer ones (30-feet and up) have two axles. They can be equipped with “tip outs” that pull out from either side as much as 36-inches, increasing the interior living space noticeably. The tip-outs then retract for delivery or relocation.

This Cottage RV is built to the same the CSA Z-240 standards as other rolling recreation vehicles but it is not fitted with a 12-volt system for fixtures and appliances, although it comes complete with sleeping, dining, cooking and bathroom facilities. Their maximum width when being towed is 102 inches, to allow them to be moved with a regular trailer license. These units cannot exceed 8½ feet in width, but may include one or two slide-out units that operate at the touch of a button to extend a section of the outside wall by at least 3½ feet.

12-foot wide

Basically, a 12-foot wide living space (although some manufacturers have limited availability of 10-foot wides). These units mostly have two axles because they are usually 30-feet long and over. Many have tip-outs that increase the living space on either side (or both sides) by 36-inches. These tip-outs retract when the 12-foot wide is being delivered or relocated. If relocation is not important, the axles can be removed and the unit lowered closer to the ground with skirting to make it easier to heat in colder weather.

12-foot wide double

Imagine two, yes two, 12-wides joined together to create 24-feet of living space! Most of these units have the two axles removed and are lowered close to the ground with skirting. Yes, even these double-wides can be relocated – like the real estate people say: location, location, location! The cost is so low, if you love the new site, just do it!

Two-step 5-102-inch wide

Step One: a 5-102-inch wide unit has 102-inches of living space with tip-outs; up to 36-inches wider on either or both sides could mean 6 feet more living space! These units are towed into place by a specially equipped pick-up truck. These Cottage RV’s are called Fifth-wheels and, like big truck trailers, have a parking landing gear – so you just back in, set the landing gear, and move in!

Step Two: at the start, the Fifth Wheel might be a little more expensive to purchase but it’s a nice step up from the 102-inch wide. After you digest the small extra cost, you’re ready to consider Step Two: buying the correct truck to tow your Fifth Wheel to the South for a winter holiday. After all, you have a parking site (your leased RV Resort site) where your Fifth Wheel usually sits the rest of the year – time to head out for adventure!

One More Thing About Cottage RV’s!

Might as well hear about it now: the first “Cottage RV” you buy will not be the last one! You will enjoy the Leisure Lifestyle so much that after a year or so, you will probably want to trade up to the one (and only experience will tell you which one that is) that you should have bought in the first place! It happens quite often. So when you get to that stage, maybe, just maybe, someone else will be trading in exactly the one that you should have purchased in the first place. Happens all the time – but don’t worry, that’s something only experience can teach you.

When you’re ready, shop around – with a little luck there could be a “Cottage RV”, as clean as yours, just waiting for you.
